Telos was founded in April, 1986 as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable corporation.

Telos offers challenging yet invigorating work.  Not only will you grow personally, while helping young persons do the same, but what you learn will lay the foundation for success in most any area of future endeavor you may undertake.

Employment Opportunities

Job openings at Telos are placed on Craig's List:  California; Sacramento;  Non-profit organizations.

As of 8/10/2008, Telos has a need for one staff, preferably someone living locally who can work two hours in the AM on school days, and then return to complete their shift in the PM.  (We will offer a fuel allowance to a staff disadvantaged by such a schedule.)

Employment at Telos

**Telos hires mature individuals, who possess strong boundaries, and can work effectively with, at times, difficult teenage boys.  Clean criminal and driving histories are a must!  Criminal background checks are conducted, and letters of reference are required, as is written documentation of past education and experience.

**To be eligible for hire as a Coach/Counselor I (CC I), a prospective staff must have one year's experience working in a similar environment with similar aged youth, or have 15 units of college in the behavioral sciences, 9 of which must pertain to problems of children and teens.  We give preference to CC's with college degrees, A.A. (60 units) or higher.

**To be eligible for hire as a Coach Counselor Assistant (CCA), a prospective staff must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.  After gaining one year's experience, a CCA then becomes eligible to promote to CC I.

**Telos employees must perform according to a written job description, and must follow a Code of Ethics.

**Telos, to the greatest extent possible, promotes from within, except for professional (social work) staff, so promotions over time are a distinct possibility.

**Telos wilderness staff do not necessarily have to have a strong background in outdoor pursuits.  Many Telos wilderness staff have first become effective working with our residents in residential care, and then pursued training in outdoor pursuits.  So if you are interested in working in the wilderness program as well, that too is a possibility.

**Telos staff, unless well experienced, begin in a graveyard, assistant, or transportation role until they become well familiar with our operations, and we with them.

**Before hire, prospective employees are required to participate in an unpaid 8 hour observation, to make sure they understand the type of environment in which they will be working.

**Upon hire, all staff undergo 40 hours of structured training.  Initial promotions, which include a certification, a pay raise and eligibility for benefits, occur after a newer employee completes a guided self-study program, work performance observations, and passes an open book exam with a score of 90% or greater.

**Once certified, benefits are health, dental, prescription eye care, pharmaceutical, and life insurances, plus paid time off.

**Many former Telos staff have gone on to successful human service careers in education, child protective services, law enforcement, corrections, and alcohol and drug counseling.  While the state legislature sets pay rates that are not very generous compared with the private sector, for individuals seeking to make an important difference in the lives of disadvantaged children, and grow professionally themselves, service at Telos will provide a learning experience like no other.
