your questions or comments now: Telos was founded in April, 1986 as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable corporation. |
"We must teach young people to lead
lives that avoid the misery of unimportance."
--Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound
**Telos is an Internal Revenue Service designated 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable organization. As such, donations are generally tax deductible, but a qualified advisor should be consulted to make certain. Our IRS number is 94-3008380. **Telos is a long standing--though not a large--charitable organization, one that has been serving disadvantaged boys since 1986. **Telos primarily serves boys who Superior Court judges have found necessary to remove from their homes. You can imagine, but we will not attempt to shock your emotions by stating the horrible traumas many of these boys have suffered in their short lives. **Telos exists almost solely on the generosity of the taxpayer. While the taxpayer is generous to these children, the income received does not cover more than absolute necessities. Especially, in these times of a rapidly increasing minimum wage, geometric increases in the cost of energy, and volatile state mandated workers' compensation insurance costs, funds to attract and keep a stable work force, and provide wilderness programming, are scarce. **Telos is unique in California, in that it has operated a high adventure wilderness program throughout its existence. Several hundred boys have been exposed to the growth and healing power of the wilderness (please check our slideshows on the "Gallery" page of this website). Though the wilderness program is highly beneficial to the residents, providing these wilderness experiences is expensive, and must be funded from a rate set for programs without such treatment resources. **The California state legislature authorizes Telos to pay an average hourly wage to Telos employees that is about 50% less than that paid starting employees at government run animal shelters! Too, not infrequently, Telos staff who transport residents to entry level jobs in the food industry, often make less than the resident they are transporting. Thus, our need to provide better for our residents as well as our employees is great. To do so, we need your help! **Since 2003, Telos is required as a condition of receiving government funding, to pass a tri-annual audit by an independent auditor. Telos has passed both audits (2003, 2006) without any "material discrepancies," so you can be assured that your charitable dollars will reach the children as you intend. **The Telos founder and director of Telos has donated over $120,000 to Telos since its inception, and also has donated not less than 30 hours of work per month for 22 years, exemplifying his degree of dedication to the children who need Telos. Thus, Telos' administration makes the same commitment being asked of you. **For donors looking to make a significant difference with their charitable funds, or who perhaps are looking to leave a legacy that will make a tremendous difference to both disadvantaged children and to an organization dedicated to serving them, then Telos is an excellent choice! **Donations should be sent to the address on the left. All donations will be acknowledged, and donors will be placed on the mailing list to receive Telos' newsletter. We will not sell your name or invade your privacy with annoying solicitations by phone or by mail. For those looking to leave a legacy through a bequeath, we assure you that your generosity will be benefiting young persons who have severe disadvantages when compared with most other children in our society. |
